Post Baccalaureate Program (PBP)
PROGRAM OVERVIEW

The primary objective of the Post Baccalaureate Program (PBP) is to assist students from culturally diverse, academically disadvantaged, or economically disadvantaged backgrounds** in gaining admission into HSC-Baylor College of Dentistry (HSC-BCD) after successful completion of the Program.  Students accepted into the Program (fellows) will engage in a rigorous, year-long curriculum that focuses on Dental Admission Test (DAT) preparation and upper division science courses.  Fellows will enhance their test-taking skills and develop learning strategies by participating in specially designed seminars and workshops.  Fellows will also observe and participate in clinics at HSC-BCD and in the community.

    2008 SUMMER SESSION I at HSC-BCD

    Orientation: June 2, 2008

    Start Date: June 2, 2008

    End Date: July 25, 2008

    2008-2009 ACADEMIC YEAR AT University of North Texas -- Denton, TX or UTD (University of Texas at Dallas -- Richardson, TX

    Fall Semester (Mid- August to Mid-December)

    Spring Semester (Mid-January to Mid-May)

    SUMMER SESSION II AT HSC-BCD (Summer 2009)

    Dates: TBA

PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS

To be eligible for consideration, all individuals must be a legal resident of the state of Texas .  In addition, each applicant must also have:

    § Completed an undergraduate degree from an accredited U.S. college or university

    § A minimum overall GPA of 2.5

    § A history of overcoming adverse circumstances and/or be considered academically or economically disadvantaged**

    § Demonstrated a desire to work with underserved populations or in communities with limited access to dental health care

    § Previously applied to HSC-Baylor College of Dentistry for admission into dental school

    § The first and second vaccinations of the Hepatitis B Series, completed before attending the Program.

    § Submitted a current PBP application including:

    - A one page statement of intent that discusses your present academic status, personal or educational hardships, and what you expect to gain from participating in HSC-Baylor College of Dentistry's Post-Baccalaureate Program

    - One letter of recommendation from a pre-dental advisor or two letters from faculty who have had you as a student in one of their science classes

    - Current official college transcripts of ALL undergraduate coursework from ALL college/universities attended

**Note:  An academically disadvantaged individual is one who comes from an environment that has inhibited the individual from obtaining the knowledge, skill, and ability to enroll in and graduate from a health professions school (Examples: 1st generation in college; English is a second language; resident of a financially poor school district; attended a low-performing high school; middle or high school home responsibility; single parent family; non-traditional student, including older age; employment while attending college; overcame or is experiencing extreme hardship; resident of a county designated as underserved by health professionals; resident of lowest 10% per capita income county.)  An economically disadvantaged individual is one who comes from a family with a annual income below a level based on low-income thresholds according to family size, published by the U.S. Bureau of the Census in the Federal Register, and adjusted annually for changes in the Consumer Price index.

PROGRAM CURRICULUM

First Summer Component

The first summer component will consist of:

    § Intense DAT preparation

    § Supplemental tutoring, review sessions and mock DATs.  Fellows will be required to take the DAT at the completion of this summer component, and must score at or above the national average on the DAT (scoring 15 or above in science sections).

    § A Learning Skills Course to teach study skills, time-management, and test-taking skills.

    § A Preclinical Dentistry Course which provides the opportunity to engage in dental laboratory exercises

    § Clinical rotations to increase exposure to and knowledge of dentistry

Academic Year Component

The academic year component will take place at the University of North Texas (Denton) or the University of Texas at Dallas (Richardson).  Each fellow will undergo academic advisement prior to enrollment and will be required to maintain a 3.25 GPA or higher in Program courses.  The curriculum is designed to magnify the strengths of the fellow's academic profile and focus on the weaknesses in their preparatory background and will consist of:

    § A total of 30 semester hours of courses to enhance science backgrounds and to improve social skills and communication

    § A minimum of 4 upper-division science course per semester

Strong academic support will be provided.

Second Summer Component

The curriculum for the second summer component is designed to enhance academic success during the first year of dental school  by offering:

    § Pre-clinical Dentisty 

    § Introduction to the Human Body

    § Learning Strategies

    § Research Courses, and

    § Clinical Rotations.

The Program and curriculum require a full-time commitment.

FINANCIAL AID

The University of North Texas' and/or the University of Texas at Dallas' Financial Aid Offices will assist students in securing financial aid, if necessary. 

SELECTION PROCESS

A selection committee composed of the Program Director, the Executive Director of Recruitment and Admissions and other appropriate members will review all applications and select students to be interviewed and admitted into the Program.  Fellows who successfully complete the Post-Baccalaureate Program will be admitted to HSC-Baylor College of Dentistry.

Number of Fellows

A maximum of 16 fellows will be selected each year.
