M.S. Degree Programs for Clinical Professionals Advanced graduate education leading to an M.S. degree is available in a range of professionally and clinically oriented areas in the oral health sciences. The principal goal of these programs is to provide advanced specialty training and education for students whose primary interest is in clinical practice, education, administration, and materials technology. The M.S. programs are administered through the Office of the Associate Dean for Research and Graduate Studies.
M.S. in Oral Biology The Master of Science in Oral Biology is available only to residents enrolled in clinical specialty, Certificate programs. This degree program is designed to extend the competence of the dental specialist in both general and special areas of clinical practice, as well as develop research and teaching capabilities. Emphasis is placed on advanced theory and practice in clinical disciplines. For more information contact the program director specific to each clinical program.
Certificate in Dental Public Health (Dr. Jay Shulman, Program Director) The goal of the certificate program in public health is to give a dentist with a graduate degree in public health advanced training in public policy development, community-based diagnosis, program planning, administration and evaluation. Emphasis is placed on oral epidemiology, research design and literature analysis. This can accomplished on a one-year, full-time basis, or for individuals with public health experience working in a public health environment, a 2-year part-time basis.
M.S. in Biomaterials Science (Dr. Jason Griggs, Program Director) The objective of the MS Program in Biomaterials Science is to provide advanced training to students with a background in either dentistry or engineering/physical science. Students with a dental background will benefit from the small class size and individually tailored curriculum, which enable those without any engineering background to learn materials science in great technical depth more easily than at a large engineering college. For students with engineering backgrounds, the program opens the door to the health sciences, which have a high level of steady research funding. They will become familiar with the biomaterials literature, make contacts at professional society meetings, and learn how to successfully apply for research funding in the dental and medical areas. Students who complete this program may continue to the PhD in Biomedical Sciences program with a concentration in biomaterials science. The PhD program must be applied for separately, and completion of the MS program does not guarantee admission.
M.S. in Dental Hygiene (Ms. Marylou Gutmann, Program Director) The primary objective of the M.S. in Dental Hygiene is to prepare the dental hygienist for leadership roles in oral health administration as well as to meet the need for educators in dental hygiene programs. The program is designed to be flexible, individualized and student-centered. Students enroll in a core of required courses and may choose between an educational or an administrative track that best meets their individual interests and career goals. Electives are also available for those interested in pursuing additional study in a specific area.
M.S. in Health Professions Education (Dr. Ernie Brooks, Program Director) The M.S. in Health Professions Education will provide students with the foundations for careers in clinical dental and dental hygiene education settings. Specific program objectives are for students to develop foundational knowledge, develop teaching skills in order to construct effective learning environments. This program has a strong and unique focus on developing faculty with solid entry-level academic skills.
Graduate Program in Biomedical Sciences (Dr. Paul Dechow, Program Director) The Graduate Program in Biomedical Sciences is a highly individualized, interdisciplinary advanced training program leading to an M.S. and Ph.D. in areas of basic biomedical science that have strong clinical relevance. This program is designed primarily for outstanding D.D.S./D.M.D. and dental specialty students who are interested in academic careers as clinician-scientists and educators in the dental health sciences. A small number of outstanding D.D.S. students currently enrolled at Baylor College of Dentistry will be considered for admission to the Graduate Program in Biomedical Sciences. Typically, this program adds one year to the D.D.S. curriculum for the M.S. and an additional 2-3 years for the Ph.D.
