General Library FAQs
Borrowing
- How do I get a library card?
In order to apply for a library card you must fall into one of these categories:
- Baylor College of Dentistry student, faculty, or staff
- Alumni of Baylor College of Dentistry
- North Texas area practicing dentists
- Physicians, medical staff, and employees of the Baylor Health Care System
- Any person in training at any Baylor Health Care System facility (during the term of their training)
- Others with the approval of the Director or Assistant Director for Public Services.
If you are eligible for a library card you will need to fill out a library card request form located at the Circulation Desk.
- How many books can I check out?
You may check out as many books as you need.
- How long can a book be borrowed?
Books in the circulating collection may be checked out for a period of two weeks.
- Can books be renewed? How?
Up to two 2-week renewals are allowed.
Renewals may be made by telephone or online via the library catalog. To renew online, go to the online catalog, then click on My Library Record in the top menu bar to renew your books.
Books that have been placed on hold by another library user may not be renewed.
- Does the library charge late fines?
The library does not charge fines. However, patrons who receive three consecutive overdue notices for the same item(s) will be billed for the replacement cost of the overdue item(s) and will be suspended until the bill is paid or the items are returned. Library suspension excludes the patron from receiving any library service including checkout, class reserves, interlibrary loan/document delivery, photocopying, and literature search services.
- Can I get a copy of an article or a book that the library does not own?
Yes, you will need to fill out a request form. They are available here, or at the Circulation Desk.

- How much are photocopies?
Self service photocopies are 10 cents per page.
- Do the copy machines take coins or copy cards?
The library has four copy machines. The copy machine next to the Circulation Desk is only for patrons who have copy codes provided by their departments. The copy machine next to the Reference Desk accepts both coins and copy cards. The two machines in the foyer accept only copy cards.
- Will library staff photocopy materials for me?
Photocopy service is available to all patrons. Library staff will photocopy journal articles, book chapters, etc. within the guidelines of US copyright law. Request forms are available at the Circulation Desk.
- Affiliated patrons are charged 3.00/article for routine service and 10.00/article for rush service.
- Unaffiliated patrons are charged 6.00/article for routine service and 15.00/article for rush service.
- How much are copy cards?
Copy cards are $21.65 and contain 200 copies. Copy cards should be purchased from the Dental College's business office on the 5th floor during business hours.
Miscellaneous
- How do I recommend titles for the collection?
Forms for recommended purchases are available at the Circulation Desk or by filling out the appropriate field values in this online form, and may be completed by any library user. All recommendations are evaluated by the Collection Development Librarian according to their relevance to the library's mission and collection development policy. All requesters receive a response.
- Does the library accept gifts?
The library accepts gifts, but reserves the right to accept the donation based upon relevancy and usefulness to the collection, completeness of the volume or set, and currency of the information. The library will handle the materials by:
- Adding the donation to the library collection
- Forwarding all or part to another library
- Exchanging the donation for other materials
- Disposing of any obsolete materials
- Selling the item received
- What journals does the library currently receive in print?
Journal Holdings Binders are available at the Circulation Desk, Reference Desk, in the journal stacks, and at the workstation between the dental and hospital computer terminals. Currently received print journals are available online.
