Orthodontics Research

  • The major focus of departmental research activity is coordinated by the Clinical Research Center in Orthodontics.
  • The Center includes a clinical treatment facility, functional analysis laboratory and data processing laboratory, and facilities for cephalometric tracing and scanning.

Clinical Research Center in Orthodontics

The Clinical Research Center in Orthodontics serves patients with orthodontic and dentofacial orthopedic problems. The diagnoses and treatment of these problems are enhanced by a body of knowledge acquired through a network of clinicians and scientists dedicated to research in this field. Together this team effort guides optimal care.

The clinical facility of the center is housed within the Department of Orthodontics. It collaborates with other Baylor College of Dentistry clinics, scientists, private practitioners and health professionals and researchers at Dallas medical centers such as Baylor, Children’s, Medical City and UT Southwestern.

Through clinical and basic laboratory research, use of current technology and conventional patient care, the center endeavors to establish appropriate reference standards for use in accurate diagnosis and treatment decisions. Measuring the results of treatment and evaluating the effect of treatment on function is another way the center serves as a resource for the practicing community.

Research within the center focuses upon:

  • Prospective clinical trials evaluating orthodontic and surgical treatment outcomes,
  • Long-term post-treatment stability studies,
  • In-Vivo and in vitro experimental testing new appliances and procedures
  • Evaluations of craniofacial growth and development investigations,
  • Practice based orthodontic research network.
