BMS 5221 - RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODOLOGY
                      
An introduction to the research process; sufficient background in research
                       design and methodology is provided to enable students to critically
                       evaluate literature and assist in the formulation of research projects. Also
                       includes discussion of rules and regulations for human and animal research.
                       2 semester hours

BMS 5222 - APPLIED BIOSTATISTICS
                       Overview of applied biostatistics with an emphasis on oral health research.
                       Training includes computer based instruction in data analysis using SPSS.
                       2 semester hours

DH 5100  -   ADVANCED DENTAL HYGIENE CLINICAL SKILLS
                       Includes self-assessment and development of advanced dental hygiene
                       clinical skills.  Contains intramural and/or extramural rotations to further
                       advance clinical proficiency.
                       1 semester hour

DH 5112  -   INTRODUCTION TO FACULTY RESPONSIBILITIES AND ISSUES IN
                       HIGHER EDUCATION

                       This course exposes the prospective new faculty member to the functions
                       and responsibilities that help to meet the institution’s mission with respect to
                       teaching, service and scholarly activity.
                       1 semester hour

DH 5130  -   CLINICAL DENTAL HYGIENE TEACHING PRACTICUM
                       This practicum course is designed to provide the graduate student with
                       experience in clinical teaching and formative and/or summative evaluation of
                       first and/or second year dental hygiene students in the areas of patient
                       assessment, treatment planning, implementation of comprehensive dental
                       hygiene clinical and educational services, patient management and
                       professionalism.  Prerequisite: DH 5201 (may be taken concurrently).

DH 5200  -   EDUCATIONAL RESEARCH
                       Students will develop the knowledge and skills necessary to be intelligent
                       consumers and producers of educational research.  A focus will be on
                       conducting survey research.

DH 5201  -   TEACHING STRATEGIES:  DENTAL HYGIENE EDUCATION I
                      
This course introduces the graduate student to a variety of clinical education
                       philosophies. Cognitive, affective and psychomotor learning theories are
                       addressed and clinical teaching methodologies are emphasized. Evaluation
                       mechanisms for assessing a novice student’s progress and development are
                       explored.

DH 5202  -   TEACHING STRATEGIES:  DENTAL HYGIENE EDUCATION II
                      
This course will expose the student to a variety of principles and methods that
                       will familiarize the student with the requirements of clinical teaching including
                       accreditation, dispensary management, developing positive staff and faculty
                       interactions and mentoring undergraduate students on projects.  This course will
                       also expose the student to a variety of principles and theories of clinical teaching
                       including developing clinical evaluation criteria, measuring teaching effectiveness
                       and student teaching in the dental hygiene clinic.

DH 5208  -   HOSPITAL ADMINISTRATION PRACTICUMS I-III
       5118       This series of practicums prepares the student for an institutional
       5219       administrative/management position. Topics include hospital organization
                       and protocol, hospital dentistry organization, healthcare financing and the
                       changing healthcare market, human resource issues, assessment, planning and
                       interventions as they relate to patient care and managing a dental clinic.

DH 5210  -   SPECIAL CARE PATIENT SEMINAR
                       Contemporary health care issues that affect the medical and dental needs of
                       Special Care Patients will be discussed.  Students in the education track will
                       develop a special needs patient course for a fictitious dental hygiene program
                       and include goals, curriculum content , and objectives that address patients
                       who are mentally, medically or physically challenged. In addition, they will
                       prepare a lecture on a special needs patient and present it to the undergraduate
                       dental hygiene students.  Students in the health administration track will develop
                       a fictitious health care facility or a mobile dental clinic for special care patients
                       and include targeted population, objectives, policy statements, budget, personnel
                       and equipment.  Administration track students will also present a dental in-service
                       to either the nurses or aids who care for patients with disabilities in a group home
                       or hospital setting.

DH 5211  -   CLINICAL CASE STUDY
                       This course enables the student to develop the knowledge and skills necessary
                       to write a formal presentation of a publishable quality case study.
                       2 semester hours

DH 5301  -   DIDACTIC TEACHING STRATEGIES
                       This course introduces the graduate student to the processes involved in the
                       development of a course syllabus and a college-level classroom presentation.
                       Using the process of assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation, the
                       student will develop a course syllabus. In addition, the student will develop a
                       classroom presentation, to include instructional objectives, lesson plans,
                       examination items and other student evaluation mechanisms, and audiovisual
                       materials.  The student will also be introduced to item analyses and test blueprints.
                       Academic integrity and evaluation of teaching performance will also be discussed.
                       2 semester hours

DH 5314  -   CLASSROOM TEACHING PRACTICUM
                       This course provides the graduate student with additional opportunities to enhance
                       classroom teaching experiences. The student will work directly with the Course
                       Director to identify a topic of interest and to develop a unit of instruction, which
                       will include goals, learning objectives, lesson plans and examination items.  The
                       student will also determine the most appropriate teaching methodologies,
                       audio/visual aids, and evaluation mechanisms. Prerequisite:  DH 5301
                       1 semester hour

DH 5V88  -   RESEARCH FOR PRACTICUM PROJECT (Administrative Track)
                       Students will assess the need for , plan, implement and evaluate a major project
                       in their interest area.
                       Minimum 3 semester hours

DH 5V89  -   PRACTICUM PROJECT (Administrative Track)
                       Students will prepare a written report of their project in their interest area. An
                       oral defense is also required.
                       Minimum 3 semester hours

DH 5V98  -   RESEARCH FOR THE MASTER’S THESIS (Education or Administrative Track)
                      
Develop a proposal; conduct original research in chosen topic; data analysis.
                       Minimum 3 semester hours

DH 5V99  -   THESIS (Education or Administrative Track)
                       Formal presentation of research literature review, objectives, methods, data
                       analysis, results, discussion and conclusions in acceptable written form. An
                       oral defense is also required.
                       Minimum 3 semester hours

HPE 5225 - TEACHING SKILLS FOR HEALTH PROFESSIONS EDUCATORS
                       (elective for Administrative Track students))
                      
Overview of teaching principles and methods including: instructional planning,
                       test construction, designing and developing instructional materials, lecturing,
                       clinical teaching, individualizing instruction and evaluating teaching effectiveness.
                       Topics such as thinking and problem solving, evaluating students in clinical
                       settings and methods of small group teaching will be covered.
