Good oral health can promote an overall sense of well being. Now, the latest trend among dentists is to offer a variety of treatments in a relaxing spa environment. Dr. Linda Niessen has details in this Dental Health Check.

ToothSpa01When most people enter the front door of this office, they ask: is this really a dental office? "I decided not just to treat teeth, but also try and refine the way they look. So it's beauty from head to toe," says Dr. Rachel Azinge of the Dental Spa of Texas.

Stacy Long no longer goes to a conventional dental office. She prefers the latest trend in dentistry: the tooth spa. During one appointment, Stacy gets her teeth whitened. Then, she has micro-dermabrasion for her skin. "It's not my father's dental office. I love it. In fact, I'd love to get my father here." The Dental Spa of Texas in Frisco offers other skin smoothing procedures and laser hair removal.

Dr. Jeff Roy, of 21st Century Dental predicts, "I think this is a definite trend." In Irving, 21st Century Dental was one of the DentalSpa02nation's first dental spas. "Nobody likes to go to the dentist, so we've created a lot of comfortable distractions so you're not so focused on the traditional, negative aspects of dentistry," said Dr. Roy.

DentalSpa03At the Carrollton office of Sensational Smiles, dentists provide relaxing ways to make the appointment enjoyable. They claim that they cater to "chickens." "Majority of our patients, at least in this practice, are somewhat fearful, most of them from past experiences," said Dr. Anna Willison.

Because the total environment smells, looks, and feels very different than traditional dental office, it might be the Perfect choice for someone who is afraid to go to the dentist. For Baylor College of Dentistry, Texas A&M System, I'm Dr. Linda Niessen, Channel 8 News.

Dr. Linda Niessen, clinical professor in the Department of Restorative Sciences and  the Office of Communications and Development at Baylor College of Dentistry, hosts Dental Health Check, the only weekly dental feature shot on location in the nation.
