BCD in the News

On Air

Baylor College of Dentistry's nationally syndicated television oral health news report, "Dental Health Check," airs locally each Monday during WFAA-TV's 6 a.m. and noon newscasts. In addition, "Dental Health Check" segments are now rebroadcast several times a day on the Texas Cable News Network.

"Dental Health Check" is available on BCD's Web site as well. Visit the site for scripts and information about the latest segments. Hosted by Dr. Linda Niessen (BCD), the report's recent topics include:

  • "Filtered Water" featuring Dr. William Bowles (BCD '77). Are you filtering out the fluoride in your drinking water? Dental researchers can test purified tap water and measure fluoride levels. They've found one type of filtering system removes almost all valuable minerals including fluoride.
  • "First Cleaning" featuring Dr. Barrie Choate (BCD '84, '86). When should young children get their first dental X-rays and cleaning?
  • "Flu and Hygiene" featuring Dr. Jeff Williams (BCD '96). With the cold and flu season's arrival, many dentists offer special advice to their patients - advice that could help reduce the risk of spreading germs.
  • "Free Family Care" featuring Dr. Bob Hunsucker (BCD '89). A family of 13 receives the gift of dental care from a family dentist and his staff who spend an entire Saturday with the children and parents. At the end of the day, there is no bill to pay. All services are free.
  • "Good and Bad Candy" featuring Hunsucker. Not all candy is created equal. Some types of sweets help dentists stay very busy.
  • "Mini-Implants" featuring Dr. Steven Fuqua. Overall health can suffer if you lose many of your teeth. A new type of implant solves a major problem for people who need dentures.
  • "New Braces" featuring Dr. Cliff Alexander (BCD '93). Throughout a lifetime, crooked and crowded teeth can cause health problems. However, orthodontics offers more choices than ever before.
  • "Oral Cancer Test" featuring Dr. Janelle Moran-Kenney. A quick test detects oral cancer early when it is most curable. Oral CDX is a painless, brush biopsy that many dentists now offer.
  • "Partial Braces" featuring Dr. Jay Ghosh. More adults are improving their oral health by straightening their teeth. Many of them choose partial braces that cost less and come off quicker.
  • "Safer X-rays" featuring Dr. Jeffrey Lide (BCD '95). New digital X-rays are reducing radiation exposure to patients. Quicker scans use as little as one-tenth the amount of radiation of conventional X-rays.
  • "Save a Smile" featuring Drs. Tonya Fuqua and Dale Martin. In many Texas public schools, dental pain is the number one reason children go to the school nurse. Those nurses are helping children get free treatment through a new program in Tarrant County.
  • "Stress and Gums" featuring Dr. Jackie Plemons (BCD '86, '88). New research released this month from Harvard University connects anger to a gum disease called periodontitis.
  • "Toothprints" featuring Dr. Clay Perry. A new method to identify children involves a trip to the dentist. Parents are getting their kids "toothprinted.
