Rossouw to lead BCD's orthodontics department
 Dr. P. Emile Rossouw, professor and clinic director in the Department
of Orthodontics at Baylor College of Dentistry, has been named the department's chair effective March 1.
"When I was offered my previous position and I came here to meet the faculty and staff, who are great people, gifted in their own ways, I thought it would be tremendous to be part of such a team," Rossouw said.
"Now I'm really excited and I feel honored that they have placed this confidence in me to lead them. I think being a leader of such a great team
should be easy. These people are supportive and willing to help whenever it's needed."
Rossouw's primary goal is to continue to build on the program's success. "I would like to continue developing our program because orthodontics
itself is evolving almost day by day," he said. "One of the goals would be to try and see how we can fit all of these developments, including new techniques and more clinical research, into the program's duration."
Rossouw said he wants to continue to make sure that basic science and clinical science are brought together to help orthodontists make better clinical decisions. He also would like to see orthodontics in an absolute
state-of-the-art clinic at BCD.
"If we have a state-of-the-art facility, we will continue attracting scholars from other places and ensure that we are not just the best in the United States, but one of the best in the world," Rossouw said.
He said strengthening the alumni's involvement with the program is also a priority.
Rossouw joined the orthodontic faculty at BCD in 2002 and has been associated with academic and clinical orthodontics in various capacities for the last 20 years.
Prior to coming to BCD, he was director of the Burlington Growth and Research Centre at the University of Toronto, a position he held until January 2002. While in Toronto, he maintained a private orthodontic
practice. Rossouw also served as head of the discipline of orthodontics at the University of Toronto and head of the orthodontics department at University of Stellenbosch in Stellenbosch, South Africa.
Rossouw earned a bachelor's degree in chemistry and physiology, a dental degree, an honors degree in children's dentistry, a master's degree in orthodontics and a doctorate in dental science all at University of
Stellenbosch. He is also a fellow of the Royal College of Dentists of Canada and has been serving this college as an examiner for orthodontics.
His published works include the areas of clinical orthodontics, biomaterials, jaw growth and long-term stability. Rossouw has lectured extensively both nationally and internationally and has contributed to more
than 100 publications. He is a member of many associations and societies and serves on the reviewing panels for various orthodontic and general dentistry journals.
