Clinical Services

Presentations: Dr. Thomas K. Hasegawa Jr. presented "Professions, Integrity and Dental Education" and was facilitator at a faculty development workshop at the University of Illinois – Chicago College of Dentistry Oct. 10. The presentation was part of the college's workshop on "Faculty Professionalism and Academic Integrity."

Hasegawa was a panelist for the Leader Skills Workshop at the American College of Dentists' annual meeting in San Francisco Oct. 23. The topic was "Quackery and Fraud."

Other News: Hasegawa attended the ACD Ethics Committee meeting Oct. 24 in San Francisco.

HSC Institutional Research

Presentation: Dr. Eric Solomon presented "A Membership Evaluation of the Proposed Strategic Plan for the Texas Dental Association" to the association's board of trustees Nov. 14 in Austin, Texas.

Periodontics

Presentations: Dr. Celeste Abraham was the invited speaker for the Dallas Dental Hygienists' Society's continuing education program Oct. 16. She presented "Dental Pharmacotherapeutics: What's New!"

Dr. Ibtisam Al-Hashimi made several presentations recently to the following groups:

• a research seminar for the faculty and students of the Queens University School of Dentistry in Belfast, Northern Ireland, in September;
• rheumatology grand rounds at UT Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas in October; and
• Lone Star Celiac Support Group at Presbyterian Hospital in Dallas in November.

Dr. David Kerns also made several presentations recently, including:

• a half-day lecture at Jacksonville University in Florida Sept. 15;
• an evening lecture on "Periodontal-Restorative Perspectives" to the North Dallas Dental Study Group in October; and
• full-day lectures on "Orthodontic Anchorage Sites" and "Periodontic-Restorative Implications of Immediate Implants" at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn., Oct. 23-24.

Other News: Dr. Nancy Burkhart attended the American Academy of Oral Medicine's Oral Medicine Symposium in New York City Nov. 14-15.

Kerns served as an accreditation site visitor for graduate periodontics at the Harvard School of Dental Medicine Oct. 13-14.

Dr. Thomas Stanford was the BCD faculty representative at the meeting of the Joint Periodontics Committee for the Western Regional Examining Board Nov. 14-15 in Phoenix.

Most of the department's faculty and residents attended the American Academy of Periodontology's 89^th annual meeting in San Francisco Sept. 21-24.

Public Health Sciences

Presentation: Dr. K. Vendrell Rankin co-presented "Dentist Saves Patient's Life! Early Oral Cancer Detection and Tobacco Use," a continuing education course held Oct. 25 during the American Dental Association's annual meeting in San Francisco.

Restorative Sciences

The Conference of Operative Dentistry for Region III held its 2003 meeting at Baylor College of Dentistry Oct. 30-31.  Dr. Christine K. Beninger organized and chaired the event, which was moderated by Dr. Marvin Hirsh. This annual meeting of dental educators is geared to sharing dental education philosophies and teaching methods in restorative dentistry with an emphasis on operative dental education.
