Sleep apnea expert to speak at BCD's 6th Annual Dr. Phillip Earle Williams Lectureship
 Dr. B.D. Tiner will be the featured speaker at the 6th Annual
Dr. Phillip Earle Williams Lectureship in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery scheduled for Jan. 24, 2004, in Dallas. Sponsored by Baylor College of Dentistry and hosted by the college's
Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery/Pharmacology, the daylong symposium will begin at 8:30 a.m. with a continental breakfast in Baylor University Medical Center's
Beasley Auditorium, which is adjacent to BCD.
Tiner, a nationally recognized oral and maxillofacial surgeon, will speak on "Advances in Diagnosis and Treatment of Obstructive Sleep Apnea." He is co-author of a chapter on this topic in one of the
specialty's leading textbooks and is considered one of the leaders in the management of obstructive sleep apnea in the country. Tiner maintains a private practice in San
Antonio, Texas, and serves as a clinical associate professor at the University of Texas Health Science Center-San Antonio.
Tiner is a 1975 graduate of the University of Tennessee College of Dentistry who earned his medical degree at the University of Texas Health Science Center-San
Antonio in 1987, then served in a subsequent anesthesiology internship. He is a former examiner for the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons and a past
president of the Texas Society of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons.
The Williams Lectureship is presented in memory of the 1926 BCD alumnus and "dean" of North Texas oral and maxillofacial surgery who also served as president of
the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons. Nationally known for his professional dedication, concern for patients and devotion to his family, Williams
established himself as a medical pioneer, teacher and public speaker. His genuine concern, sense of humor and amateur magician skills endeared him to all who met him,
enabling him to bridge both generational and professional gaps in all areas of his life. In that tradition, invited lecturers for this symposium are selected on the basis of their
distinguished scholarly accomplishments and their sense of humor.
The tuition-free lectureship is made possible each year through voluntary contributions of colleagues to perpetuate the fund. It also is sponsored by 3i Dental Implants, the
Walter Lorenz Surgical Instruments Company and David Werntz, Walter Lorenz's Dallas distributor. Texas State Board of Dental Examiners' continuing education credit
(three hours) will be provided to participants.
