Carol Libby, administrative assistant I in periodontics,
was named Staff Employee of the Third Quarter 2003 by the Baylor College of Dentistry Staff Forum recently. During the group's October meeting, Dr. Bill Hallmon,
professor and chair of periodontics, introduced her as someone who has all the good qualities listed on the award nomination form.
"She has always made herself available to help with any problem," he said. "She is very professional, finds answers to problems that come up and knows how to deal with each situation."
A BCD employee for five years, Libby serves as president of the BCD Women's Club. She has two daughters: Morgan, 13, and Jane, 9. They live in Dallas with two Persian cats, Angel and Mimi.
Hometown: Dallas
Place I'd like to live/retire: I would like to have a lakefront house where I could view the water from my living room and go out on my boat every day if I wanted.
Role model: My grandmother is 97 years old and has always been a role model for me. She is smart and beautiful inside and out, and she is the most giving person I know.
She treats me more like a daughter than a granddaughter and has consistently taught me the important things in life.
Personal motto: Don't sweat the small stuff; life doesn't have to be that hard.
Best thing about my job or BCD: My job is so versatile. I get to plan big lectureships and have a lot of responsibility in keeping the departmental clinics and labs running smoothly.
Career highlight: It is a very good feeling to be nominated for this award by my boss, Dr. Hallmon. It made me feel appreciated and that the work I do is recognized.
If I wasn't at BCD, I'd …: probably be working for a lawyer.
Life philosophy: Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.
Pet peeves: People who take the last of something without replacing, refilling or telling someone we need more.
Favorite vacation destination: I love to spend time with my sweet daughters at the beach because we don't use the phone or the television. We have all day and night to
do fun things together and regroup in a relaxing atmosphere.
Dream car: Mercedes convertible
Favorite hobby: I enjoy gardening. I love to have a pretty yard with lots of different kinds of flowers. It makes the world of my backyard peaceful and beautiful.
Word that best describes me: Smiley
Something you might not know about me: I am a homebody. I would rather be at home than anyplace else.
Top three passions: My children, my home, my job
What my colleagues say about me: "Carol is the 'go-to person' whenever I've needed help. If she doesn't have the answer, she will always find it for me," said Dr. Miles Beach
, assistant professor of periodontics. "She is superb at organizing events for the department. I don't know what we would do without her."
Dr. Terry Rees (BCD '68), director of stomatology in periodontics, finds Libby to be someone he admires and respects. "She is the person I turn to for advice concerning the
many new administrative issues that have arisen over the past few years," he said. "Carol also is the person I turn to when I need cheering up after a particularly stressful
day. Somehow she is always pleasant, friendly and highly competent even when the pressure is at a peak.
"She is also persuasive," Rees continued. "If you don't believe that, then check with all the men who are now members or contributors to the BCD Women's Club!"
Dr. Francisco Rivera-Hidalgo, associate professor and director of research in periodontics, believes Libby is an indispensable member of the periodontics team.
"Even though she is very busy, Carol willingly accepts additional responsibilities and is always very pleasant," he said. "All departmental activities have benefited from her enthusiastic and supportive involvement.
"With a smile, Carol tackles difficult problems and constantly strives to achieve full understanding of the situation," Rivera-Hidalgo explained. "Her contributions to the
day-to-day activities always go beyond what is expected."
