BCD hosts collegewide centennial picnic
Volleyball, balloon art, sack races, giveaways and more will be part of the fun at Baylor
College of Dentistry's Centennial Celebration Picnic on Sept. 30 from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. in the outdoor picnic area behind the Baylor Tom Landry Fitness Center.
Faculty, staff, students, retirees and guests are invited to the Friday afternoon event, part of the concluding weekend of the dental school's yearlong Centennial Celebration.
A disc jockey will provide music while guests dine on picnic fare, including hamburgers, hot dogs, roasted corn, funnel cakes and snow cones. Traditional picnic games, photo buttons, a clown and a prize
drawing for high scorers in BCD's ongoing, online trivia quiz are all part of the picnic plans.
"Students, faculty and staff are the heart and soul of our college, and we want to do something special to honor them as part of the Centennial Celebration," said Dr. Robert V. Walker, Centennial
co-chair. "The picnic promises to be great fun for everyone."
Faculty, staff, students and retirees will each receive two tickets to the event. Additional tickets may be purchased for $10. If you missed the ticket distribution days or need more information, call Cindy Ceen,
assistant dean for administration, at Ext 8205.
Note: Centennial T-shirts, perfect to wear to the picnic, are now available for purchase (see "BCD Stories").
BCD marks 100th anniversary with convocation
State Dental College, the predecessor of Baylor College of Dentistry, began classes Oct. 3, 1905, in rooms above a grocery store on Commerce Street where the Adolphus Hotel now stands.
One hundred years to the day, Baylor College of Dentistry will mark that first day of classes with a reception and convocation at the Morton H. Meyerson Symphony Center in Dallas. The convocation will bring
together academic, medical and political leaders from across the state of Texas in addition to the students, faculty and staff of the dental school.
The "Centennial Anthem" will debut during a special processional recognizing the first 45 students who attended the dental school 100 years ago. Another highlight of the convocation will be the introduction
of a ceremonial baton and gonfalon (banner) that were commissioned in honor of BCD's centennial. Students, staff and faculty representatives will participate in the program.
"Reaching the 100-year mark is a significant milestone," said Dr. James S. Cole, BCD dean. "We encourage faculty, staff, students and friends to join us in celebrating this important, once-in-a-lifetime event."
The reception will begin at 9:30 a.m. in the lobby of the symphony center, followed by the convocation at 10:30 a.m. There is no charge for the convocation. Parking is available in the Arts District Garage,
located at Ross Avenue and Leonard Street. The college is covering parking costs. Carpooling is encouraged.
